The 2023 line-up illuminates how the independent movie world during and shortly after Covid. This year’s movies are a balanced juxtaposition: live action and animation, dance and theatre, international and domestic, lighthearted comedy and serious drama, freedom and captivity, and present and past.

Carmen

Carmen is forced to leave her home in Mexico following the murder of her mother, and she escapes to the United States where she meets a man who is trying to move forward in his life. The movie incorporates dance styles from flamenco to krumping (with a lot of ballet) to tell their love story.

After 25 years, Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake. The movie runs approximately 30 minutes, making it a short film.

Carla Nowak, a dedicated sports and math teacher, starts her first job at a high school. She stands out among the new staff because of her idealism. When a series of thefts occur at the school and one of her students is suspected, she decides to get to the bottom of the matter on her own.

Carla tries to mediate between outraged parents, opinionated colleagues and aggressive students, but is relentlessly confronted with the structures of the school system. The more desperately she tries to do everything right, the more the young teacher threatens to break.

The Teachers’ Lounge is a German-language film that is alternatively titled Das Lehrerzimmer

Freud’s Last Session
