Zurich Film Festival 2024

Hashtag at 2024 ZFF: #BigCityLife

Every year since 2018, the Zurich Film Festival designates a hashtag to represent the year’s focus, and this year’s hashtag is #BigCityLife.

This article is part of our coverage of the 2024 Zurich Film Festival. For more articles and notes on films playing this year, please visit our main ZFF-2024 page.

About the Hashtag

Every year since 2018, the Zurich Film Festival designates a hashtag to represent the year’s focus.

The “Hashtag” section showcases films that are deeply rooted in contemporary global discourse. These films, both features and documentaries, offer diverse perspectives on pressing issues. To date, the festival has explored the following themes:

#Masculinity (2023)
#MyReligion (2022)
#letSEXplore (2021)
#GetUpStandUp (2020)
#SpeakingTheTruth (2019)
#BigData (2018)

This year’s hashtag, #BigCityLife, highlights a curated collection of feature and documentary films that delve into the dynamic urban experience. The films showcase the diverse and interconnected communities that thrive within cities, inviting audiences to explore the complex interplay of housing, culture, nature, and infrastructure. As we look toward the future, these films prompt us to consider the challenges and opportunities that cities present.

Screenings with the Hashtag

Nine films have been given the hashtag so far: La Cocina, L’Histoire de Souleymane, To Close Your Eyes and See Fire, Mother City, Obedience, Faruk, Happyend, Cohabiter, and Kurzfilme #BigCityLife. Some of these movies seem a bit dark and gloomy, and they aren’t ones we’ve chosen to see at the festival this year. However, we are excited to see the following films:
