Housekeeping for Beginners (2024)

The Story

Housekeeping for Beginners (2024) delves into the complexities of family, both chosen and inherited. Dita, a woman who never envisioned motherhood, finds her life unexpectedly turned upside down when her girlfriend dies, leaving her to raise the girlfriend’s two daughters: the rebellious teenager Vanesa and the mischievous Mia. Unprepared for the challenges of parenthood, Dita grapples with navigating the unfamiliar territory of emotional connection, discipline, and finding her own place within this newfound family unit.

The film goes beyond heartwarming family moments, exploring themes of societal expectations and personal growth. Dita, an individual who values independence and personal freedom, confronts societal pressures that often define women through the lens of motherhood. As she struggles to balance her own desires with the needs of her children, a poignant conflict arises. Vanesa, grappling with grief and teenage angst, clashes with Dita’s unconventional approach, while Mia’s innocent cheerfulness adds another layer of complexity to their dynamic.

This family journey unfolds against the backdrop of a changing Macedonia, reflecting broader social commentary on evolving gender roles and the search for belonging in an imperfect world. “Housekeeping for Beginners” is not a fairy tale of instant familial bliss, but a nuanced exploration of love, loss, and the unexpected ways we build families and find our place in the world.
